The Best Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Made with bananas, Greek yogurt, egg whites, and honey, this Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is healthy, delicious, and so easy to make. It's made with no sugar, no butter, and no oil, too. Obviously it's the best healthy banana bread recipe!

Over the years, I've discovered that most people give me a "look" when I show them my healthy recipes on the blog. It's always a look like "well, that's great for you, but there's no way any of your food tastes good" or "oh, you're one of those kind of people."

On a few occasions, however, I'm surprised to hear "ok I need to try your recipes!" No matter what the response, I always have my one crowd-pleasing, award-winning recipe that seals the deal, changes lives, and is literally my best recipe: my Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread!

The goal of my blog is not to convince people to live on lettuce and 100 calorie meals. I want to show people that eating healthy is easy and delicious. Why is this banana bread the BEST banana bread?

First of all, my Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is NOT dry or crumbly. I refuse to have anything of the sort on this blog! My banana bread IS moist, light, and fluffy. It's the most decadent pillow of chocolate-studded bread you'll ever put in your mouth. It's the best!

Oh, and I should probably mention theres NO BUTTER, OIL, OR REFINED SUGAR in this bread! Um ok what?! (Unless you count the chocolate chips of course, but who counts chocolate chips? If you're hard core and want to proudly claim there's no refined sugar, I recommend Lily's baking chips or Enjoy Life's mini chocolate chips.) No butter, oil, or sugar means guilt-free snacking, my friend. It's the best!

Lastly, this bread is READY in one hour. Most recipes you'll come across say you need to bake for 50-65 minutes. My Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread is DONE in 60 minutes! If you move quickly, you can have the batter ready before your oven beeps at you. Pretty sweet, right? No more waiting around for your favorite snack. It's the best!

Healthy Ingredients Make the Best Banana Bread

  • Overripe bananas: I can't stress this enough. Your bananas should be more brown than yellow for the sweetest flavor and best texture. I also recommend sticking with fresh bananas rather than thawing frozen ones. Frozen bananas won't have the same texture and will come with extra liquid we don't want.
  • Nonfat vanilla greek yogurt: replaces butter/oil in the batter. I always always always use Oikos Triple Zero for incredible flavor and nutrition profile: no fat, no added sugar, and no artificial flavorings with 15g of protein per serving? Yes please!
  • Raw honey: replaces refined sugar in the batter. Using a natural sugar helps your body better manage its glucose levels and how it reacts to carbohydrates. Honey also has a better flavor in my opinoin!
  • Egg whites: for a boost of pure protein. I've tested this recipe with an egg and a 1/4 cup of egg whites and you can't really tell a difference in the batter or the final bread. Either option works!
  • A mix of white AND whole wheat flour: I chose to use a blend of both flours to find a happy medium between nutrition content and the perfect texture. The whole wheat flour retains all the vitamins from the kernel, while the all-purpose flour gives the light and fluffy texture. Note: I have not tested this recipe with just one flour or the other. However, if you'd like to make this recipe gluten-free, you can replace the wheat flour with oat flour and the white flour with a 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose flour.
  • Chocolate chips: because, chocolate! If you'd like to truly keep this recipe refined-sugar-free, you can omit the chocolate chips (what a sad sentence) OR use either this brand or this brand of chocolate chips!

Tips for Making the Best Banana Bread

Have all ingredients ready to go: you don't need to have an individual bowl for every ingredient like those Tasty videos you see on Facebook, but you should have them all out on your counter ready to mix in. This keeps the batter as fresh as possible and makes the prep go even faster! You DO want your bread ASAP, right?

Use overripe bananas: if it's going to be the best banana bread, we need the best bananas! Bananas are a blend of starches and simple sugars. As the fruit ripens, the starches change to sugars, thus sweetening the banana and adding extra flavor to your baked goods. My favorite bananas are the ones with lots of brown spots, but still a touch of yellow on the peel.

Add ingredients in the correct order: I know you probably don't like the idea of extra dishes to wash, but it's well worth worth the work. Baking is a science, so it's important to introduce ingredients in the correct order. It's also important to work quickly because you want the ingredients to react in the oven, not on your counter! To ensure the best results:

  1. Mash the bananas in a large bowl until they become a puree.
  2. Whisk in all the wet ingredients until well combined. Mixture will be thin!
  3. Whisk all dry ingredients together in a separate bowl. Add to the wet ingredients and fold gently until just combined. There should be a few streaks of flour remaining.
  4. Fold in the chocolate chips until just combined. I only need three or four folds!
  5. Transfer immediately to a prepared bread pan and bake in the oven.

Don't over mix the batter: just like you don't want to over-knead a yeast bread, you don't want to over-mix your quick bread. The more you mix, the more the gluten from the flour will develop, which will leave you with a dense, unevenly-baked bread. And you don't want that!

Let the bread cool in the pan: I know it smells absolutely amazing and you just can't wait another minute, but you need to let the bread cool for at least 15 minutes in the pan. The bananas will have caramelized during baking and need time to set with the finished bread. Removing and slicing early will leave you with a wet, mushy bread that falls apart in your hands, and that's no fun!

Devour: this is the best part! Whenever I make a loaf, it usually doesn't last for more than two days (it's just my husband and I at home!). If you want to spread the love and goodness of the best banana bread recipe, I recommend keeping it in an airtight container in the fridge. When you're ready for a slice (or four!), reheat in the microwave for 20 seconds until warm.

Make This Loaf of Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Into Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins

  1. Prepare wet and dry ingredients according to instructions.
  2. Fold in 1/3 cup chocolate chips. Divide batter between 12 greased muffin tins, then top the batter with the remaining chocolate chips.
  3. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  4. Store in a container at room temperature for two days, then transfer to the fridge for another two days. For best results, keep let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate immediately. To reheat, place muffin in the microwave for 20-30 seconds until warm.

The Best Healthy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

  • 3 overripe bananas, mashed
  • ½ C nonfat vanilla greek yogurt
  • ¼ C raw honey
  • ¼ C egg whites (or 1 egg)
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla
  • 1 Tbsp milk (I use almond)
  • 1 C whole wheat flour (spooned and leveled)
  • ½ C all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ C chocolate chips* (sugar-free if necessary)


  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F and line a bread pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the bananas, greek yogurt, honey, egg whites, vanilla, and milk until well combined.
  3. Fold in wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt until JUST combined. A few streaks of flour should remain.
  4. Fold in chocolate chips until JUST combined. Do not over mix!
  5. Pour batter into prepared bread pan, top with extra chocolate chips if necessary, and bake for 40-45 minutes. I usually do 43 minutes.
  6. Let cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then slice and serve.


I always use mini chocolate chips. If you want to keep this recipe refined-sugar-free, I recommend Lily's Baking Chips or Enjoy-Life Chocolate Chips.
